040: Exchange Gift

I made this a while back to post for Christmas.  Unfortunately, I misplaced it and was incredibly disappointed!  I just got it back recently and decided to post it anyway.  Everyday is a Christmas Day, right?

Give and Receive

I created these comic strips in two different perspectives hoping it would have more depth-- a "2-D" comics if you will.  They share some common frames and I wished I could have combined it into just one strip somehow.  But that might be too confusing even for me.

Strip # 1:

Strip # 2:

While these strips could have been better (e.g. have good colors and clearer computerized font), I think it is a fitting post so near Christmas.  Happy Holidays to all!

038: The Wish

I made this while thinking how that one big thing we're trying to achieve may not be our ultimate dream at all.  This is the irony in Kat's story -- how she has all the fame, money and prestige yet what she really wants is something a little more simple.  It is also ironic that this "something simple" could be done by just about anyone but her!

So what I want to impart is this: do what you want to do whether it's simple or hard and know that nothing is impossible in life!  I know for a fact that Kat will be able to play hopscotch, she just have to figure out a way how.

035: N.O.P.E. Indeed

* N.O.P.E. - Network of Photo Enthusiasts

Sometimes I have to step back and realize that I am depicting a brood of twelve-year olds.  But reality is from time to time I'll inject subjects mostly associated with adults -- in this case entrepreneurship and programming.

Besides, it is never too early to show interest on these subjects.  I don't want to pigeonhole anybody, male or female, young or old.

Dyesebel (the Mermaid)

If somebody were to ask me what my first cartoon is, I would have to say it's this one.  I made this years ago when the series Dyesebel is airing and I was enamored with it.  Dyesebel is one of the well-known sirena (mermaid) in Philippine history and has numerous comic books, movies and TV series under her belt.  And who could forget Fredo, Dyesebel's love interest?

Definitely unearthed from my archives!  I also decided to add an English translation underneath.

Translation in English: (note that this is not a direct translation.  Just so that the punchline will not be lost.)

Frame # 1--
Dyesebel: Fredo, drink this medicine so that we could be together under the sea forever.
Fredo: Yes, just for you Dyesebel my love.

Frame # 2 --
Dyesebel: Its effect is fast.  In a little while you will be a...

Frame # 3 --
Fredo: ...sea monster?!?!  Not a merman??
Dyesebel: There's no need to whine...

030: Wishing of Suburbs

I work in a city but grew up in the province.  In the city, it seems like everything is available -- restaurants open 24/7, plenty of moviehouses, plays and fun runs; generally, you wouldn't be bored and people are up and about almost around the block.

But I always dream of the province.  The simplicity of it, the trees, the small community and fresh air.  I want out of the consumerism and make homemade clothes; grow my own garden instead of always eating out; walking on soil and grass instead of concrete...

Maybe someday but when will that someday be?

DIY: Handmade Paper

One of my to-do's is handmade paper.  I bought this handmade paper making kit from Papemelroti years ago and used it once to make a total of four sheets of paper.  That's right, four sheets!  Still, I decided to give it another go, hopefully making a whole bunch this time.

Here is a simplified step-by-step guide based from the kit instructions  (refer here for more detailed instruction).  I love how Papemelroti consciously promotes not only recycling materials but earth-friendly activities, too!

Things needed:
*bunch of scratch/used paper
*water
*starch
*blender
*basin
*newspaper
*sponge
*Deckle (part of kit)
*Mold (part of kit)

1. Tear/cut used paper into 1/2 inch squares.

2. Use a blender to mix the paper with water.  I used the proportion: 2.5 cups of paper = 3.5 cups of water.

3.  Place mixed paper and water into the basin.  Add 2 tablespoon starch.

(Kinda looks like food...)

4.  Place the deckle on top of the mold (wires should be in between) and scoop up paper.  Shake a bit to get rid of excess water.

5.  Remove Deckle and place Mold on newspaper with the used paper between the mold and newspaper.  Using a sponge, soak up remaining excess water.

6.  Detach Deckle from the paper.  Design *optional*.

Design # 1: Decided to press some dried leaves

Design # 2: Paper with dried flower petals

7.  Leave the paper for 0.5-1 day or until dry.  By then it should detach easily from the newspaper.

And voila!

Relatively easy, right?

Verdict: Fun to do and very informative but if you desperately need papers, better just buy a ream from the store!  I think I cut out around 50 used-up paper to make 17 sheets of paper.  Plus I spent hours doing this stuff!

028: Le Horror

A few days ago I had the chance to watch an oldish (late 80s/early 90s?) Filipino horror movie.  And I have to say: scary!  Old-fashioned movies set in a far away barrio where nipa huts are abundant and there are more trees than people -- yes please!  Time flies though and these far-away barrrios probably have SM and Robinson Supermalls which, in my opinion, dampened the overall horror film setting. *sigh*

027: The Babysitter Part II

For the longest time, I have been wanting to do another babysitting cartoon but I always get bogged down with the ending. Everytime I think of that last frame, I always think "reject!" and felt I have to start from scratch all over again. So I thought why not have several endings to choose from? It might not have the solidity that I have always wanted to achieve but it satiates my "babysitting fever" at the moment. So here it is, a cartoon with three different endings. I have my preferred one but I'm not going to tell. =)

026: Prayer

I am not going to deny that I am hesitant to make Anger, Fury and Contempt become too involved in mischief or fights or whatever bad things they ought to be doing. The main reason for this is I am pro-peace and believe I ought to put emphasis on positive things.

During times like this though, when I have a sudden compulsion to write about them, I have to add:

Veronica Lodge Lookbook

Since I've posted a Betty Cooper Lookbook months ago,  posting one for Veronica Lodge seems most appropriate.  This has been at the back of my mind for a long time and I couldn't shake it off anymore so here goes.

Veronica is most famous for her swimwear:

It's also expected that she has a lot of formal wear-- she's a socialite after all.  If Betty is the type to shop at thrift stores, Veronica is the type to shop at Prada, Gucci, et. al:

Here's Veronica with some going out outfits:

Day-to-day and casual wear:

Veronica breaking out of the habit of wearing skirts and dresses.  Here are some shots of her with pants and legwear:

Some psychedelic looks.  I wish I could pull these off!

023: The Jones

I've always been tickled by the thought of down-to-earth, non-materialistic rich people.  I love the idea of Warren Buffet with his 20+ year old vehicle (or so I've heard) and Mark Zuckerberg still sleeping on a mattress on the floor even when he's already worth US$1B.

What I also love is that these rich people are way beyond the "Keeping up with the Jones'" mentality.  After all, they could unquestionably afford what the Jones' have... and more.

022: Rockstars

I believe most pre-teen/teenage girls go through "I am gaga over this boyband/heartthrob singer" phase.  This includes Beatles, Elvis Presley, Menudo, NKOTB, Backstreet Boys, Justin Bieber, etc (whatever your age bracket is).

Because I consider that phase to be one of the happiest in my life, I was inspired to create this comic strip.

To my beloved BSB-- this is for you!

021: A Good Deed

Meet the latest character as posted in the last Profile Card.  This time a puting dwende named LoveJoy.  Finally a good Filipino Myth character type!  So far, I have only those "evil","sinister" beings (packaged in cuddly versions).  Now I have a cuddly being in an even cuddlier version!

020: Itim na Dwende Bootcamp

The lives of our Itim na Dwendes are a little bit more complicated than we thought!  Here they are learning how to be world-class itim na dwendes --

A little bit of glossary:
* Itim na Dwende -- black dwarf; a mischievous beings that wreak havoc to humans in Filipino Folklore
** Puting Dwende -- white dwarf; counterpart of black dwarves.  Supposedly they are friendlier and doesn't harm humans.
